His career has been defined by a relentless focus on advancing safe injection technology and bringing practical, high-impact solutions to market.
Rich is a named inventor on nearly 60 issued U.S. patents for safety needles and syringes—many of which are critical to enhancing healthcare worker safety and underpin products commercialized by Becton, Dickinson and Company (BD), a global leader in medical technology. His innovations have been utilized billions of times worldwide and are reflected in widely recognized products such as the BD SafetyGlide™ needle, BD Integra™ retractable syringe, BD TwinPak™ dual needle shield, BD SoloShot™ auto-disable syringe, and BD Eclipse™ needle with SmartTip™ Technology, all of which contribute to improved patient outcomes.
Rich's individual achievements are impressive, but he has also significantly advanced product development across the medical technology industry, particularly in areas that enhance healthcare worker safety and improve patient outcomes. He began his career at Becton, Dickinson & Company, where he refined his medical device design skills over 25 years. Following that, he branched out to establish his firms, Fulcrum Product Development Consulting (PDC) and Expressions Design Services (EDS). Throughout his career, he has collaborated with leading multinational pharmaceutical and medical device companies to design, develop, and license groundbreaking technologies that prioritize both healthcare worker safety and the enhancement of patient outcomes.
Rich’s global experience also includes serving as Chief Technology Officer for Hope Pharmaceutical, a medical device manufacturer specializing in saline and heparin flush syringes. This role further strengthened his expertise in high-volume, safety-critical device manufacturing, which is essential for enhancing healthcare worker safety and improving patient outcomes in the medical technology field.
